Sizing It Right

posted in: Jobs, Motivation

Regardless of your age, it’s always possible to move ahead after being pink-slipped and use the goodwill you developed over the years.

With the economic meltdown still eating away at the economy; trends like downsizing and retrenchments are posing worrisome questions for senior workers. The job market is tight to say the least and landing a job at this age is never easy. But take heart front the fat that experience is always valued, and if you fall in the right category; there is no reason for the right people not to recruit you.

So how do you go about the business of searching for a job yet again?

If you’ve just lost your job, don’t take it personally. It’s certainly a blow, but you need to move on and keep calm. Look dispassionately at your options. Sometimes being in a settled job makes us take our assets for granted even worse, we may not even know what our assets really are.

Childish as it may seem, take a pen and paper and write down your skill sets, strengths and qualifications, and you may just end up surprising yourself.

At this age, a resume isn’t important. In fact, it’s secondary. What is important are contacts and the network you’ve built over the years in your present job. From old school friends, to college mates, there is no one who cannot be of help to you. Send out feelers to people you think may be able to help you and if the response is positive, then send out your resume. Even better, introductions by the people you’ know is always a good thing a voucher in itself for your experience and value.

Regardless of your’ age, it’s always possible to move ahead and use the goodwill you’ve built up over the years. Who knows? You may find that your job search is shorter than you expected it to be.
